I ♥ NY?
Glazed Ceramics, 47 x 10 x 10 in, 2025
This sculpture presents a humorous yet sharp construction of a monument of the ordinary day. It rises from cold metallic rubble at the base and stacks upward to a rat holding a cookie at the top, forming an absurd visual accumulation. The work combines iconic fast-food symbols like donuts, fries, cakes, and ice cream with industrial elements such as propellers, cones, and mechanical fragments, creating what feels like an urban totem growing out of sugar and calories. The deconstruction of this work mirrors the style of New York City itself. It resembles a giant 'sugar market'.The cold, rigid, industrial-looking foods at the base symbolize the concrete foundation and fast-paced rhythm of urban life. From this base, all the upper layers “grow” into food items beautified by consumerism, seductive yet artificial, almost plastic in appearance.
To contextualize, I live in Hell's kitchen. So an ordinary day starts for me with going to the deli to grab a coffee with milk. The coffee is not too bad here and I really appreciate the cashier. She knows in advance what I am gonna take and always greets me with a smile. In front of her is a shelf filled with cookies, cakes and muffins. I really wonder who buys them. The cakes look like plastic, and I just realized that the cookies are five hundred calories each. That's too much, it's almost an entire meal. Maybe that's why everybody has a gym membership. It's also funny because the deli’s name is “Hell’s Kitchen fruit market”. I mean, I understand it sounds nicer than “sugar market” and it's true that they have a few fruits in the middle of all the Cookies.
