Lonely
Glazed Ceramics, 39,5 x 9 x 8 in, 2025
This sculpture reflects the strange tenderness of urban companionship. A dog wearing a party hat balances atop a fragile tower of orbs, like planets of emotion, joy, anxiety, affection, distance, rotating in the emotional gravity of city life. Some dogs wear shoes. Some people throw them birthday parties. Maybe it is ridiculous. Or maybe it is survival.

Many adopted dogs during the pandemic, reaching for warmth when the city went cold. In their loyalty, many found the emotional commitment they could not make with someone new, and without it, they felt deeply lonely. This work is not just about dogs. It is about us, how we try to feel saved, or at least feel meaningful, in a place that never sleeps.
Anyway, today I have decided to go to central park. It's only a few minutes walk from where I live. Oh wow, there are so many dogs in the streets. Look at this one. He has a bow and a coat, He is almost better dressed than the owner. And this one has shoes, it's ridiculous. Do dogs really need all those clothes? And do dogs that don't have clothes feel unloved? I wonder how people manage to have dogs in such tiny apartments. Like this guy who has two huskies. At the same time, I learned that a lot of people bought dogs during the pandemic because they felt lonely. It makes sense, I sometimes feel lonely too. It's a weird feeling to have when you are surrounded by 8million people. When there are so many opportunities to meet someone new, I guess it is hard to commit. But most of us are usually alone at the end of the party. Some dogs probably saved people from depression. Maybe that's why they deserve dog spas and birthday parties.
